Lent Talks 2019

This year Ash Wednesday is on Wednesday 6th March, this is the beginning of Lent. It is a day of fasting and abstinence.

A series of 6 talks have been prepared for this lent. We are providing advanced notice of these talks to enable you to make preparations that will assure your participation.

On each Wednesday of the six weeks of Lent we are going to have an evening in the Presbytery where we can learn about prayer. We are going to have six short talks on six different types of prayer and then a chance to practice each of these sorts of prayer. The aim being to enrich our practice of prayer and bring us nearer to Christ.

The Season of Lent this year will start this week with ASH WEDNESDAY on the 6th March 2019. During this period we are invited to join Jesus in the Spirit of His desert experience. He chose this time away from public ministry to be one with the Father. Jesus the divine in the solitude of the desert did not shed his humanity.

Such solitude came at a price. He faced temptation same as we do in our ordinary life. Jesus fought the temptation, so that we too might draw strength from His example. During this time of Lent we are invited to meditate and look closely at the Life of Jesus in the desert leading to His passion and crucifixion.

The twice weekly devotion of the 'Stations of the Cross' is a good opportunity to enter the Spirit of Lent. There is of course the daily Mass with the appropriate reading for the season. The little pamphlet "Day by Day" is also helpful. Other Spiritual reading can be made available on request. Finally the Parish 'LENT TALKS' is another way of exploring the Spirit of Lent through the Sacraments. Apart from all these Spiritual exercises we can choose to do something practical for others especially if that requires a degree of self sacrifice to make the deed more meaningful.
